See Where Your Shade Will Fall

Pick the perfect spot before you plant

Where you plant matters. A few feet in the wrong direction could mean a hot living room instead of a cool one. Our tool lets you see exactly where your tree's shadow will land—before you commit.

How it works:

  • 1 Find your house on the map
  • 2 Choose a tree height (small, medium, or large)
  • 3 See where the shadow falls throughout a summer day

Want help deciding? Let our AI recommend the best placement for maximum shade.

Bonus: While this grant covers front yard trees only, use the tool to explore what backyard trees could do for you down the road—or see how your neighbor's trees might help too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting your free trees

How much does this cost?
+
Nothing at all! The trees, professional planting, and supply kit are completely free. This program is funded by the USDA and U.S. Forest Service. Note: Once planted, watering and ongoing maintenance become your responsibility.
How many trees can I get?
+
Each household can receive up to 2 trees. You can choose from 16 species—8 native and 8 desert-adapted non-native varieties.
What about dead trees or stumps in my yard?
+
Great news! For qualifying homes that sign up for free trees, dead trees or stumps that are blocking where new trees should be planted will be removed as part of the professional planting service.
Who plants the trees?
+
Professional arborists and licensed landscape contractors handle all planting. They'll also coordinate with 811 to mark underground utilities before digging. You don't need to lift a finger!
Can I plant trees in my backyard?
+
Unfortunately, no. Trees must be planted in your front yard, within your property lines (not in the right of way). This maximizes community benefit by shading sidewalks and helping cool our streets.
When will trees be planted?
+
Planting is scheduled for the week of January 24, 2026. You must apply by December 31, 2025 to be included in this planting round.
What size trees will be planted?
+
Typically 15- or 25-gallon trees depending on nursery availability. The exact height varies by species—click on any tree to see its mature size.
Do I need to water the trees?
+
Yes. Once planted, watering is your responsibility. New trees need about 5 gallons every 5-7 days for two years. You'll receive a maintenance supply bag to help. All selected trees are drought-tolerant and need less water once established.
I'm a renter. Can I still apply?
+
Yes! Renters can apply, but you'll need written permission from the property owner before trees can be planted.
Are fruit trees available?
+
No, fruit trees are not part of this program. All 16 available species are drought-tolerant shade trees selected for Phoenix's climate. The Olive Tree variety provided is fruitless.
What if I have power lines above my yard?
+
Choose a tree marked Powerline Safe. These shorter species won't interfere with overhead lines. Tall trees cannot be planted beneath power lines.
